We were SO excited to welcome a very special visitor today!!! Mrs Richardson came to spend some time in the Engine Room. I know she loved hearing students read and discuss their understanding of stories and characters while making personal connections, and listening respectfully to the contributions of others. Mrs Richardson, please visit us anytime, we love sharing our learning journey with you!

Congratulations to Keeley this week. Your infectious enthusiasm for learning inspires and enhances our classroom every day.
I am always so impressed by how engaged students are in an outdoor learning environment. This week we have been learning about data, how to collect and represent information in a way that is easy to read. We have learnt about tally marks, totals and how to read information in a graph. Today we went outside to collect data about the traffic outside our school. Originally we planned to count cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes. We pretty quickly realised it was going to be very challenging to count SO many cars, so we swapped the car count for Emergency Vehicles. These activities give me so many opportunities for assessment, which helps direct our teaching and learning program to appropriately support the needs of individuals and small groups within the class. We recorded vastly different numbers of vehicles. The students reflected on this as we came back into class and decided that next time it may be better to work in pairs, with one student counting, one recording. We also thought we could allocate different types of vehicles to different students. Some children also decided that they may have been more accurate if they didn't talk to their friends so much (nice personal reflection!) and a couple of children commented that they now realised you had to actually count the vehicles not just draw the tally marks. This sounds so simple to us as adults, but it shows how hands on tasks provide such great opportunities for a more authentic understanding, and that the so called flaws in our learning provide the best opportunity for growth in understanding. Oh my goodness - what a wonderful day we have had today!! Everyone looked absolutely gorgeous in their Easter Hats and it was lovely to see, meet, and catch up with so many parents, grand parents and precious family friends. Thank you for sharing our special day. Congratulations to our Week 9 Award Winners!
Cruz you have worked so hard in Grammar activities, I love seeing you identify verbs so confidently. Well done Neive! You have been working diligently to improve your writing. I love seeing your hand and pencil racing across the page, knowing I will be reading another wonderful story :-) Belle received a special award from Mrs Hosking today for her enthusiastic approach to all art activities. I'm not surprised, her Ray White Competition artwork was beautiful! Last week Stage 1 was lucky enough to have 1/2SR's Nathan's dad, Jason come and talk to us about his role as a volunteer firefighter. It was really interesting for us to hear about how Jason manages his paid job, his family commitments and his volunteer work and all the training that goes with it. We LOVE to hear about people who love what they do and have passion and a commitment to their community. Jason's talk related to our HSIE topic about Workers in the Community, but also to our Science topic, about the way materials can be mixed for different purposes. I loved hearing about the different types of fires and that they require different firefighting materials to help put them out. It was also really interesting to hear about the different materials in the clothing firefighters wear to protect them in dangerous situations. Congratulations to our hard working Week 8 winners!! Sasha, I love the way you have tried so hard to focus on all your new learning activities. And well done Poppy for your determination to strengthen your ability to use a variety of new Maths strategies! Keep up the great work girls! 😊 We continued with our Science unit All Mixed Up this week by making mixtures using cornflour and water. We also introduced the roles of Manager and Speaker to more clearly define roles and responsibilities within our collaborative learning groups. Everyone will get a turn of wearing the special bracelets and taking on these leadership roles. When recording our observations, some of the words we used included: white, dusty, dry, chalky, powdery, milky, liquid, dissolved, hard, separated, gooey, wet. Is it really Week 7??? There was nothing lucky about this week's award winners, their success is due to their commitment and dedication.
Charles, I am SO proud of you for making exceptionally good learning choices this week! Staying focused and on task helped you to produce some fantastic sentences about a chocolate house. Your writing was very neat and humorous - a difficult thing to do! Keep up the great work :-) Congratulations Elliot for your outstanding attitude to learning which enriches our classroom every day. Your ability to notice and celebrate the talent of others is another characteristic that strengthens the Growth Mindset in 1/2T. Thank you Elliot! During Literacy Groups, students rotate through differentiated activities in order to develop and consolidate their knowledge, understanding and skills. The rotations usually include reading in the Engine Room, Reading Eggs, a creative writing activity, grammar or spelling work, or the Listening Post.

Rebecca ThomsonI come to teaching later in life with all the enthusiasm and passion it takes to complete a degree while parenting and working part time. I was lucky enough to complete my internship with Skye Surrest on Stage 3 in 2013 and am now loving my third year teaching a Stage One class at Brookvale Public School. Brookvale is a very special school. The staff are amazing, incredibly dedicated, kind and supportive... But most of all, I love the students! 1/2T are such a wonderful class and I adore teaching and learning with them every single day! Blogs I follow
