I hope all our families have a chance for some relaxation over the holidays.

The end of term disco is something we all look forward to with much anticipation. It is SO MUCH FUN seeing all the children in mufti, enthusiastically busting their moves. Unfortunately, the photos never give an accurate account because it's dark and everyone is too busy moving around enjoying the moment. Look at that gorgeous backdrop Sarah Long?? We had a royal visitor today, which added a bit of extra excitement, especially when one of our favourite songs, Let it Go came on. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0MK7qz13bU I hope all our families have a chance for some relaxation over the holidays.

The competition for Gold, Silver, Bronze awards this term has been neck and neck because there are so many students working with enthusiastic determination to be respectful, responsible and to do their personal best. I am incredibly lucky to share a classroom with so many dedicated learners. I definitely could have handed out more than three awards! This term our deserving winners are Elliot, Keeley and Sam. Congratulations and thank you for your consistent efforts to make 1/2T a fabulous place to be! Today we had a mega-literacy day as an end of term treat. We started with sentence work. We write a simple sentence and then 'bump-it-up' using language features we have learnt about to improve our descriptions. The difference was amazing with students using alliteration, adjectives, personification, similes and metaphors to improve their writing. We are working towards being able to name the language features we use, identifying audience and purpose in the writing we produce. We also worked on spelling and grammar, reading, comprehension, speaking and listening, creative writing, iPads and Reading Eggs. This afternoon we used our artistic skills to build communication skills through visual literacy... hopefully you will see the results in tomorrow's learning! The Great Book Swap has been a fabulous success this week with students excitedly donating books and gold coins in exchange for a pre-loved literary treasure. Due to ongoing interest we will roll the Book Swap into next week so that students are still able to bring a gold coin and purchase a book. All funds go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, who seek to purchase new books and improve literacy skills in remote communities. In the words of Quentin Bryce “We know that literacy is the key to choice, to income security, to developing potential – and it is the key to an enriching and rewarding life. That is why the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is so important.” Please feel free to make another purchase or donation in the week to come and thank you so much for your generous support so far. I adore seeing our students SO EXCITED about buying books!! Congratulations to our determined SRC students who have led and supported this project so enthusiastically! We are developing a wonderful community of writers and storytellers at Brookvale Public School and it was very exciting to celebrate their work at our Author's Breakfast yesterday. One of our lovely guests commented that, in a world of digital technology and screen time, it was beautiful to see stories celebrated in the written and oral form with a personal audience. While I love technology and sharing news and work samples through the blog, I totally agree with our guest.... There is something magical about connecting in person. Thank you to our talented and hard-working authors for sharing your stories, including those students who preferred to share their work quietly with their loved ones. Thank you to all our parents, family friends, teachers and special guests who came to acknowledge the efforts of our students. Much gratitude to those who contributed mouth-watering treats!!! So delicious!!!!! And many thanks to everyone who made me feel so special on my birthday :-) On Monday afternoons we are very lucky to have Miss Kovacs share our classroom. We have programmed maths at this time to make the most of her talents and ensure that all students are able to work in small groups with a teacher to meet their individual learning goals. This week students are working on using addition and subtraction to solve word problems, consolidating their understanding of place value,as well as the split and vertical strategies with two- and three-digit numbers. When not with a teacher, students consolidate their understanding using Mathletics, mathematics apps on the iPads, and numeracy games and learning resources. Congratulations to our Week 7 Award Winners! It has been very easy to notice your hard work and the contribution your effort makes to our classroom.
Thank you Neive for being such an AMAZING mermaid, your creativity, enthusiasm and dramatic skill had us all applauding! Said, your special award is from Mrs Patterson who acknowledges your efforts to read with expression during Literacy Groups. Well done! Keeley, your infectious enthusiasm for learning makes our classroom a vibrant happy place. You inspire all students to challenge themselves while valuing the knowledge and understanding of others. Thank you! As part of our Enrichment Program this term we have been incredibly lucky to work with Get Kids Cooking getkidscooking.com.au/ So far we have made delicious quesidilllas, Morrocan couscous and cheesey scrolls. Yesterday I spent time with 1/2J and we cooked corn fritters. So simple! So delicious! They were so good that I don't have a photo of the finished product because they were eaten as soon as they were out of the pan!! Okay, I may have been too busy tasting to remember to take photos... Congratulations to our Week 6 Award Winners!!
Sasha, I was so proud and grateful for your respectful and responsible behaviour throughout our Showcase performances. You were always ready to listen and ready to dance! Tess your pencil has been flying across the pages of your writing book recently! I really enjoyed your incredible starfish adventure narrative. Keep up the great work - I love your stories In the planning stages we always have discussions about paper plane challenges, father/child three-legged races, obstacle courses, picnics, spreading out around the garden........ and then it rains, and we all squish into the hall and admire the number of fathers who have made time to spend with their children and our school community. I really enjoyed our Father's Day Breakfast this morning. I love seeing dads hanging out with their kids, but most of all, I love seeing the delight on our student's faces and the way they think that an extracurricular activity on school grounds is incredibly exciting. Having a bacon and egg roll in the hall with your dad takes on the thrill of Luna Park - it is a joy to behold. Thank you to everyone that made this morning possible!

Rebecca ThomsonI come to teaching later in life with all the enthusiasm and passion it takes to complete a degree while parenting and working part time. I was lucky enough to complete my internship with Skye Surrest on Stage 3 in 2013 and am now loving my third year teaching a Stage One class at Brookvale Public School. Brookvale is a very special school. The staff are amazing, incredibly dedicated, kind and supportive... But most of all, I love the students! 1/2T are such a wonderful class and I adore teaching and learning with them every single day! Blogs I follow
