Hello everyone. I hope you are settling back into school routine. It has been lovely to catch up with all our gorgeous students and get started on our learning adventures for the term. We've been learning about place value and the way that a zero holds a place as well as fractions. We have started our Science unit about water as a precious resource and in History we are learning about family life in the past and present. Of course we are also very excited about our Showcase Spectacular in Week 6!
At the end of last term, one of our literacy groups, The Lions, were working on another collaborative writing task. I think you will agree that the result is very impressive! The Story Tree by Tanaz, Keeley, Sam, Molly and Elliot In the countryside, nestled in a lush green field was a gypsy caravan. The caravan is one of the prettiest you have ever seen. Mostly, it is painted white, but the door and windows are bright blue like a summer sky. Each window has a window box overflowing with rainbow coloured flowers including roses, hydrangeas, violets, bluebells and jasmine. The flowers attract butterflies and bees, making the display even more beautiful. Behind the caravan is an ancient woodland. One day Elliot, Keeley, Molly, Sam, Tanaz and Ms Thomson were strolling through the woods collecting berries in a woven basket. Sam brought along his book which helped to identify which berries we could eat and which were poisonous. As we sat down to nibble on some fruit we noticed a trail of footprints heading into the dark part of the woods. We started to follow. It got darker and darker, and colder and colder but we kept walking. It’s hard to say why we kept walking. We were very curious and we couldn’t seem to turn around. We realised that we were not the only people in the forest. Just up ahead, Elliot saw Alice Miranda riding her horse Bonaparte. Alice Miranda did not see us though, she was galloping in the other direction. Beyond the next tree, Keeley nearly tripped over Harry Potter with Hedwig on his shoulder. He was writing an essay with a long piece of parchment and a quill. Harry looked up and asked, “Can you tell me where Hogwarts is? I seem to have lost my way.” We were speechless!! What was Harry Potter doing here in our woodland? Out of the corner of his eye Sam glimpsed a furry wolf’s tail. It was Max and he was leading The Wild Things all around the forest trying to find his way back to his room, hoping his supper would still be warm. This was getting strange! We couldn’t believe that we were seeing characters from our favourite books right here in the forest with us! What was happening? Were we part of the story? Was this the complication? Who are the authors? While we were asking these questions Molly saw Pig the Pug being mean to Trevor, poking his tongue out, teasing Trevor and not sharing his toys! Pig the Pug was behaving just the way he did in his books. Tanaz was wondering why she hadn’t seen any of her favourite book characters, when who should trot by but Thelma the Unicorn! Aaron Blabey was sitting on a wooden chair against an enormous oak tree. He was scratching away with a pencil and notepad creating his next book. The heading at the top of the page said Wendy the Wonder and underneath he was drawing a whale. As we came closer, we realised it was not an ordinary oak tree. The tree had an arched doorway at its base. Its branches reached higher than any other tree in the forest. The branches were shaped to form all the letters of the alphabet. The leaves were pages with thousands of stories written on them. We had heard of this type of tree but didn’t believe they were real. Now we had to believe it because here it was in front of us. A Story Tree. The problem was that the characters were escaping from the tree! As each character escaped, the stories faded and fell like autumn leaves. The branches turned grey and the leaves crunched like cornflakes as the words disappeared forever. What should we do? We needed the help of a professional author! We remembered that Aaron Blabey was sitting at the base of the tree. We raced over. “Mr Blabey! Please help us!” We need to convince the characters to return to the Story Tree and bring it back to life!” “Sure!” Aaron Blabey replied, “I know how to solve this problem! I am an author! I can do this! I will write them back into the tree using my powerful writing skills. We need to work quickly before all the stories fade and are lost forever. Will you help me?” “Sure! What do we do?” Aaron Blabey shared sheets of paper and pencils with us. We all drew, wrote and shared our work and slowly, very slowly, the characters around us followed our words and illustrations and entered the door of the Story Tree. The mischievous Max was the last one to return, but no one was surprised at that. There was a loud rustling and scribbling sound as the stories blossomed again. We noticed a brand new shining golden leaf. We looked closer and realised that Wendy the Wonder had been born and took her place on the Story Tree. We all breathed a sigh of relief. It had been an amazing day saving our favourite characters. |
Rebecca ThomsonI come to teaching later in life with all the enthusiasm and passion it takes to complete a degree while parenting and working part time. I was lucky enough to complete my internship with Skye Surrest on Stage 3 in 2013 and am now loving my third year teaching a Stage One class at Brookvale Public School. Brookvale is a very special school. The staff are amazing, incredibly dedicated, kind and supportive... But most of all, I love the students! 1/2T are such a wonderful class and I adore teaching and learning with them every single day! Blogs I follow
