Ali and Keeley and some of their Stage 1 friends made an exciting discovery in the playground today.
I am so ridiculously proud of 1/2T (again)!! This morning we harvested a lot of our beautiful produce and prepared it for sale at our Vegetable Stall this afternoon. The children were SO ENGAGED in this activity! They made posters, counted and packaged beans, wrapped posies of leafy greens and herbs, predicted how much money we would collect if we sold all our goods. When it came to sale time, they were brilliant. Adding and subtracting, giving customers a total and figuring out change. This was far more effective than any game of shops we have played when learning about money and just so pleasing to see that we could grow enough produce that we have been able to eat, cook AND sell this term. Congratulations and well done 1/2T!
Congratulations to Sam, Tanaz and Sebastian, our Gold, Silver, Bronze winners for Term 4!!!! You have all worked incredibly hard and shown enormous commitment to your learning. We are all so very proud of you! Two weeks ago Mrs McArthur and I were lucky enough to meet Mike Baird as part of the new teacher network we have been involved in. When we returned to school we told the students all about it and decided to test our persuasive writing skills by inviting the Premier of NSW to visit our school to tell us about his role in the community. We told him all about the wonderful learning opportunities at Brookvale Public School and described the reasons why we love our school. The students must have done an excellent job because we received a letter from Mr Baird today thanking the children for their letters and accepting our invitation!!! We are waiting to find a time in his busy schedule, hopefully it won't be too long! Congratulations Stage 1 Students!!
We are still waiting to see if we have persuaded Costa.... fingers crossed :-) Our vegetable garden has responded well to the combination of rain and warm weather and is looking phenomenal! We have a bountiful crop of beans and radishes and the tomatoes are continuing to grow and ripen. It is so exciting to see the children invested in a long term project that takes time, care and perseverance to reap rewards. It was so hot today that we had two cool down sessions in the garden. We watered all our vegetables.... And there were a few times when the hose slipped and we all got a little bit wet The Lighthouse by Belle
The lighthouse keeper was sitting at his desk when suddenly the candle on his desk blew out. The lighthouse went all dark and gloomy but he did not give up. Quickly he lit another candle and rushed up the stairs to where the light of the lighthouse was. Then the lighthouse keeper saw what the problem was, the light had somehow been blown out. He tried to fix it but he could not. The boat was coming! He was still trying to fix the light but then it smashed into pieces! He was so sad. Then, the town came with candles and the boat turned and sailed safely away. The Lighthouse by Elliot Once upon a time in a faraway land was a lighthouse keeper who lived in a lighthouse. Below the lighthouse was a village where some people were having a party, he had asked them if he could join in, “No!” they had said. So the lighthouse keeper felt angry, lonely, mad, jealous and sad. Bang! The light fell. “Oh no!” thought the lighthouse keeper, and that’s when the trouble happened. A boat was coming! He was terrified! What would he do? He quickly got his toolbox but alas it was too late. The light smashed, bang! Luckily the glass did not hit him. But the boat was coming towards the rocks. The lighthouse keeper ran back down towards the door, when he opened the door all his friends were there. Soon everyone in the village was crowded around the lighthouse, they shone their lights and stopped the boat from crashing into the rocks, it turned around just in time. This morning we watched Lighthouse (2008), an animated short movie by Charlie Short and Ming Hsiung on https://www.literacyshed.com/the-lighthouse.html. We shared adjectives, nouns and strong verbs (which are the muscles of our writing) to describe and predict what was happening in the film and then the students wrote their own story inspired by the Lighthouse. We have some very talented authors in 1/2T who are always striving to improve their writing. Below is just one example by Freya. I will hopefully add more during the week.
The Lighthouse What happened to the almost crashing boat? by Freya There once was a lighthouse man who was writing some important letters. Beside him was a candle, the candle was lit with orange flame. The window was open, the man reached over and shut it tight. Just then, there was a loud bang and the window flung open, the candle blew out and the lighthouse stopped working! The man ran up the stairs and got his toolbox and tried to fix the light. He lifted the light from its place. Just then he saw a boat, he dropped the light, and the light smashed into tiny little pieces. The man sighed, he looked back at the boat, it was heading straight for the rocks! He hurried for the door and saw a strange light coming towards him. He realised it was the people from the village below, they were all carrying lanterns. They all went to the place where the light was supposed to shine out of the lighthouse and they shone their lanterns and the boat turned away from the rocks. The lighthouse man was so happy that he had tears running down his cheeks. Swimming lessons have started this week and have been a great success so far. The months of telephone calls, emails, notes and behind the scenes organisation by Mrs Richardson have been amazing - Thank you for all your hard work Mrs Richardson!!! We love swimming!!!
It has been interesting to observe that the students are learning far more than stroke correction. Being on adventures outside of the classroom and our normal routine require resilience, organisation and a sense of responsibility for our behaviour and our belongings. Keep up the great work 1/2T!! |
Rebecca ThomsonI come to teaching later in life with all the enthusiasm and passion it takes to complete a degree while parenting and working part time. I was lucky enough to complete my internship with Skye Surrest on Stage 3 in 2013 and am now loving my third year teaching a Stage One class at Brookvale Public School. Brookvale is a very special school. The staff are amazing, incredibly dedicated, kind and supportive... But most of all, I love the students! 1/2T are such a wonderful class and I adore teaching and learning with them every single day! Blogs I follow
